Outer space, the “Final Frontier,” has captured human imagination for centuries. Our ancestors studied the night sky, dreaming (and perhaps not quite believing) that someday humans would actually be capable of venturing up into it.
Advances in technology have allowed us to demystify some of what lies beyond our world, but we have simply scratched the surface of an immeasurable and unconquerable universe. Human exploration of space is still in its infancy; we’ve truly only managed to stand at the door and peer out into the expanse.
I spend a lot of time thinking about space and our place in it, and I find it to be a great source of inspiration for writing music. Upper Atmosphere is my attempt to create a soundtrack for humanity’s exploration of outer space, evoking the wonder, danger, and beauty encountered along the way.
I made most of these songs in late 2023 as a soundtrack to help my newborn son fall asleep. Since my free time was limited, I started taking bits and pieces from songs I’d previously released and transforming them into entirely new sounds that are unrecognizable from the originals. It was a new approach to making music, and I am thrilled with the results; I hope you enjoy the experience of listening to them!
My son is far too young to comprehend it now, but I look forward to the day when he gazes up at the night sky and, like so many before him, dreams of going there.

The seeds of this have been slowly growing for years, ever since I first read about long-term nuclear waste warning messages and the work of the Human Interference Task Force. I struggle to plan for next week, so it blows my mind that some people can be looking thousands of years into the future and thinking about how to keep our descendants safe from the problems we’ve created for ourselves.

Surveying the windswept hills, everything is just a bit out of focus through the static. A sleepless night spent worrying, brimstone visions of charred manzanita and pyracantha fade with the dawn. A brighter day emerges, the sky still hazy with smoke, but clearing out slowly. In the strange, lingering light, something stirs inside and the tide shifts outward toward the horizon. Faint flickers of blue spiral into view as the planets align and we end up back where we started.
Clutching the memory of the way we wanted things to be, buzzing on that nostalgic anticipation and fully immersed in the gauzy filaments of wishful thinking, astride the rising and falling drones cresting to their final destination, we forget what we once knew and meander down the path, in tandem.

Ed was thinking recently about how so many coming of age movies (especially modern ones) follow a sort of “nighttime odyssey” structure, in which the protagonist wanders all night through the city and stays up until morning, encountering life-changing experiences along the way (going to a party, a long drive, encountering a new love or new friend, etc.). “Coming of Age” was written with those kinds of scenes in mind, a fictional soundtrack for this kind of movie — Instrumental songs laced with nostalgia, covering themes of loneliness, angst, and finding yourself.

The actual game score work for the game consisted of little loops and transition parts that could be chained together. These little snippets appear in the more quiet parts of the game and add to the atmosphere. For this release, the loops were arranged in an evolving structure, allowing them to flow as fully realised tracks.
Profits for this work will be donated to various rainforest conservation projects.

Christmas Passed is a compilation album containing multiple releases from Passed Recordings artists, but also our friends on the Ambient Soundscapes Discord server. All proceeds from this release will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.
There were very few rules for what could/couldn’t be made other than one thing:
All of the tracks on this album had to be made primarily from one or more recordings of a Christmas Market.
Once the challenge went live, our contributors went away and collected field recordings from Christmas markets around the world: Cardiff, London, Berlin, Offenbach, Maryland, Falun & Warsaw.
These samples were then sliced, spliced and distorted into the pieces on the album.
The final release contains tracks from Passed Recordings’ Chris Hobbs, Christian Schwöbel, Exit Chamber, Take Me There & G!GA LURGH.
It also contains tracks from our friends: Toys In The Static, Ben Bork, Few Genes, Sky Lore & Twilight Sleep.
